You Asked: How Can You Tell If Probiotics Are Active?

Probiotics are living organisms, and you should choose active strains to ensure you’re getting the best quality. Read on to learn how to tell if your probiotics are active — and what to do if they’re not.

Observe the expiration date. Since they are alive, expiration dates matter greatly with probiotics. Check the date on the bottle before you buy, and make sure to finish your probiotics before they expire for best results.

Follow the storage instructions. Probiotics need to be stored at a specific temperature range, so if you leave them in a sunny window or in your car in winter, it can kill them.

Look for the CFU. The CFU (colony-forming units) count tells you how many live microorganisms were present when the product was manufactured. Choose supplements that list the CFU count at the time of manufacture and guarantee a certain number of live probiotics through the expiration date, not just at the time of manufacture.

Check the packaging. When we started to formulate SubCulture™Probiotics, we chose to use a bottle that is lined with a material that absorbs moisture. The desiccant lining helps keep the probiotics from spoiling, so they stay alive and active in the bottle!
