Why Women Need Their Own Probiotics

In your body as in life, it’s all about balance. Even the strongest and most resilient among us gets thrown off balance sometimes. Urinary tract and vaginal imbalances can happen at the most inopportune of times – weekend getaways, during final exams, work trips, the onset of new relationships, marathon training, etc.

How can you find your balance? Think of your microbiome the same way you would your yoga practice, for example. If you want to stay strong and steady in tree pose or headstand, it needs to be a habit – you don’t quit after the first wobble. You practice to build strength and find ease. Making probiotics a habit is even easier. Simply take one capsule daily, to cover your bases and find your balance.

Why Those Old Home Remedies Don’t Work

The rules of dating – and taking care of our sexual health – have changed a lot in the last few decades. Why are we still relying on advice that’s so last century? Drink cranberry juice for urinary health? It’s partially true: This tart, tannin-rich fruit does contain a substance that makes the lining of the bladder and urinary tract slippery. However, you’d need to drink a full cup of mouth-puckering, unsweetened juice twice a day (for weeks).

Adding baking soda to water? It lacks research and could lead to occasional digestive discomforts since you’re neutralizing stomach acid.

SubCulture™ offers an easier way – one that’ll help you thrive as your unique, best self!

What is the Gut-Brain Connection?

Ever have a “gut feeling”? Science has proven that there is a gut-brain axis that is a two-way street, with messages coming and going from the immune, nervous, endocrine and other systems. Your digestive tract is lined with hundreds of millions of neurons. This “gut brain” is your enteric nervous system. Thanks to all those neurons and your vagus nerve, it’s on speed dial with your actual brain and central nervous system. About half of your dopamine and 95% of your serotonin and are supplied by your gut bacteria.

That connection means that what you do for your gut impacts the brain — and vice-versa. Probiotics help maintain a healthy balance of gut bacteria and keep the brain and gut connected.

Why L-Theanine?

L-Theanine is an amino acid naturally found in certain types of teas. It has been shown to help promote happiness and relaxation and reduce stress.* The amino acid is believed to promote healthy levels of feel-good hormones like dopamine and serotonin.*

for Bloat

Bloat-busting probiotics*

Clinically studied probiotics to help reduce occasional gas and bloating*

Foundational strains to promote digestion, regularity and immune health*

Why Does Bloat Happen?

Occasional bloating happens for a couple of reasons: Water retention and gas produced in the intestines. Probiotics can offer support for the latter. Ideally, when we digest food, we chew it thoroughly and produce adequate digestive enzymes to break it down without any slowdowns. But if partially undigested food starts to reach the end of the line or if it lingers too long, it can ferment in the large intestine, leading to gas – especially if there aren’t enough good bacteria there to offer support.

bloat-why-does-bloat-happen-square.png__PID:c96d9448-6840-42ca-8129-6957910790cc
Why Choose Probiotics Vs. Enzymes?

Probiotics and enzymes go together like peas and carrots – and there’s no need to choose just one! They can work together in the digestive system. Enzymes break down the food, and probiotics ensure the gut has enough healthy bacteria for optimal digestion. You take one or both!

Bloat-Why-Choose-Probiotics-Vs-pn.png__PID:d03a73ce-40d4-43ff-996c-159d7d2e5d8d
Why Do Women Seem to Have More Bloat?

No, it’s not in your head! Certain occasional GI complaints (including those connected to stress) are more common in women, especially as we age. The American College of Gastroenterology has found:

  • Women experience slower gastric emptying (a reason why more women deal with occasional nausea and bloating) and release less gastric acid than men.
  • Women are more likely to be “super tasters” and are more sensitive to GI tract stimulation.
  • Throughout most of their lifespan, women’s large intestines empty more slowly (and are longer than men’s).
  • Women’s anal sphincters squeeze with less pressure but their esophageal sphincters squeeze with more force, especially after drinking fluids.

Why? When it comes to occasional digestive issues, researchers think that differences in nerve cells within women’s GI tracts are responsible.

What are Probiotics?

Probiotics are the beneficial bacteria that live in your gut. They are living things — mostly bacteria. They are found throughout your digestive tract, especially in your intestines. Probiotics help to keep the bad bacteria that enter your body in check, and they assist in promoting a well-functioning digestive system. Certain probiotics even produce those helpful digestive enzymes that break down your foods. Your gut is home to not only your digestion, but also much of your immune system. Probiotics have benefits that extend beyond the digestive system.*

And What Do Probiotics Really Do?

In short, probiotics are tasked with the 3 Cs in your microbiome: crowd, create and communicate.
Crowd
Icon-Crowd.svg__PID:e263f63a-2fd7-42aa-af3d-b386264ffcae

Balance is a game of numbers. The good ones need to crowd out the unwanted/bad ones, then adhere to the lining of your gut. Think of it like a game of musical chairs in the GI tract!

Create
Icon-Create.svg__PID:7f27195f-9a0e-4ae0-8f26-da27f9f35922

As probiotics do their work and naturally die off, they create post-biotics. These are beneficial by-products (short-chain fatty acids, enzymes, vitamins, neurotransmitters, etc.) that have their own health benefits.

Communicate
Icon-Communicate.svg__PID:47e7dbec-1d90-40a0-9283-acc7d766c430

These bacteria are alive – and they are active! They get involved in communication between the gut and the brain (via the vagus nerve and neurotransmitters), immune system (via cytokines and T cells) and more.

What is the Microbiome?

The microbiome is the “mini-ecosystem” of microbes living everywhere throughout your body, including your skin, vagina, urinary tract, eyes, mouth and gut. Most of the bacteria are helpful (symbiotic) or at least not harmful (non-pathogenic). While the microbiome contains all the bacteria in and on your body, several health benefits have been linked to the bacteria in your gut specifically, and this is what most people are referring to when they talk about all the good the microbiome can do for you.

These benefits include:
What-is-microbiome-list.png__PID:e913823a-959b-425a-9239-04813e57249e
The goal of the microbiome is balance, so the good bacteria can do its important work.

Why Food Isn’t Enough

Certain foods do provide probiotics. These include: kefir, yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, tempeh, kombucha and some types of cheese. However, due to cooking, storage or food preservation methods, the probiotics are often partially or completely killed off before you eat them. These foods still deliver health benefits, as dead probiotics are known as post-biotics. These compounds possess their own beneficial qualities! They also offer plenty of nutrition.

But, if you’re looking to support a specific aspect of your health and well-being using probiotics, talk to your health-care provider about choosing a probiotic supplement for women’s health, bloating, mood, digestion, regularity, etc.

A Probiotics Primer

Probiotics

Beneficial bacteria that live in your gut/are consumed as supplements. They are living things — mostly bacteria. They are found throughout your digestive tract, especially in your intestines. Probiotics help to keep the bad bacteria that enters your body in check, and they assist in promoting a well-functioning digestive system. Certain probiotics even produce those helpful digestive enzymes that break down your foods.

Prebiotics

Fermentable fiber that serves as food for probiotics. They are indigestible carbohydrates that are easily metabolized by the microflora in the gut. Prebiotics help maintain digestive health and regularity by feeding probiotics. Good sources of prebiotics include: chicory root, pea fiber, green bananas, cooked and cooled rice and pasta, onions and garlic. While a healthy balanced diet usually provides ample prebiotic fiber, you can also take prebiotics as a supplement.

Post-biotics

Once your probiotics have consumed the prebiotics, it produces beneficial by-products, called post-biotics. They include compounds like vitamins, enzymes and amino acids. Probiotics transform prebiotics into post-biotic compounds, including short-chain fatty acids that benefit your health. Dead probiotics are also post-biotics!

Synbiotics

This refers to the combination of prebiotics and probiotics, since they work together to benefit the host (that’s you!). (Sometimes also called symbiotics.)

Probiotics and Microbiome FAQs

What's a CFU?

A CFU is a colony-forming unit. This represents the number of viable bacteria or yeast cells in a dose that can multiply and form colonies. A CFU number on the bottle indicates the potency of the probiotic supplement. The higher the CFU count, the more live microorganisms are present, typically ranging from millions to billions per dose.

But potency isn’t solely dependent on that number: The effectiveness of probiotics also relies on the specific strains used and their ability to survive through the digestive tract. It's important to choose a product with an appropriate CFU count based on individual health needs.

How do I take SubCulture™?

As with any supplement, follow the instructions on the label. SubCulture™ is a once-daily probiotic capsule. Adults take one capsule daily, with or without food.

Why should I take SubCulture™?

We believe great health starts with healthy digestion. Taking care of your gut – by nourishing your microbiome with probiotics – is key to a healthier, more vibrant life. Why?

Cultural awakenings start from within, and a healthy gut supports not only digestion and regularity but also the immune system, mood, women’s health and more.*

How long do probiotics take to work?

Individual responses vary, so consistency is key when taking probiotics. For best results, it's often recommended to continue for at least a month before evaluating effectiveness.

The time it takes for probiotics to work can vary depending on several factors, including the specific strain of probiotic, the health condition being addressed and an individual’s overall health. You might notice changes in digestive issues within a few days to a couple of weeks, while immune, mood and other areas of health may take longer.

What does SubCulture™ do?

SubCulture™ delivers clinically studied probiotics in formulas designed to help you feel your best, from the inside-out. We start with our core blend of 7 strains for foundational microbiome support. Alive and active, they won’t die off in the bottle – or in your gut. With 50 billion CFU, it covers your bases, promoting digestion, regularity and immune health.*

Is SubCulture™ compatible with my dietary restrictions?

All SubCulture™ products are vegetarian; some are also Kosher. As with all Enzymedica products, our probiotics contain no crustaceans, eggs, fish, gluten, nuts, sesame, shellfish, soy, wheat and artificial colors, fillers or flavors.

Is SubCulture™ safe to take while pregnant or breastfeeding?
