Enzymes are the “energy of life.”

Thousands of enzymes are constantly at work in your body behind the scenes. In your digestive system, your salivary glands, stomach, pancreas, liver and small intestine produce and secrete digestive enzymes to break down food into nutrients. To completely convert food into nutrients that can be well-absorbed, your body needs steady supplies of those digestive enzymes.

The body requires a sufficient amount of digestive enzymes to break down a meal — and sometimes there’s just not enough. That could be due to age, lifestyle or personal habits, an inherited genetic deficiency (like lactose intolerance) or simply overdoing it on occasion. Sometimes, your body needs a little help. That’s where digestive enzyme supplements come in.

Partially undigested food leads to fermentation in the gut, resulting in uncomfortable digestive symptoms like bloating, gas, indigestion and even constipation or diarrhea. Not all enzymes are created equal

Quality enzymes don’t list measurements solely by weights (such as milligrams or grams). Enzymes need to be measured by activity levels, using unique standards for each type.

To test enzyme activity units, we use the internationally recognized standard called the Food Chemical Codex. This is a collection of standards for the purity and identity of food ingredients. Each type of enzyme has its own FCC unit activity abbreviation.

Quality enzymes should list the number of units, not their weight. No exceptions!

Get to know digestive enzymes

Digestive enzymes are named based on their function. They typically end in -ase. For example, lactase breaks down lactose, protease breaks down protein and lipase breaks down lipids (fat).

Digestion is a complicated, systematic process that begins even before you take your first bite of food. When you smell something delicious and your mouth waters, your salivary glands are kicking off digestion. Saliva offers more than moisture; it also delivers your first round of digestive enzymes to help you start to break down food by chewing it. From there, different macronutrients are digested at different stages, with the help of the stomach, small intestine, pancreas and liver.

These are the digestive enzymes for each macronutrient group:

Amylases

These enzymes convert carbohydrates into sugars. The body uses sugar (glucose) for energy which is in fact the only source of fuel for your brain. A shortage of these enzymes means undigested carbohydrates end up fermenting farther along in your GI tract. If you've ever baked bread, you know what happens during that process - gas and bloating. While that’s helpful for getting dough to rise, it's less than ideal for your gut.

Lipases

These enzymes help break down dietary fats, as well as fat-soluble nutrients (i.e., vitamins A, D, E, and K; omega-3 and other fatty acids.) Without adequate enzymes, your body can’t unlock the power of these nutrients, which play important roles in immune, bone, brain and cardiovascular health.

Protease

These are enzymes that dismantle proteins into their building blocks, or amino acids. Proteases help remove dead and dying cells, tissues and protein-based toxins and they unlock the amino acids necessary for building healthy muscle mass. They are also crucial for cognitive support and cellular regeneration, which we explain in “Why Enzymes?” Undigested proteins go to waste, which can lead to bloating, cramping, nausea and even toxicity.

Cellulase

This enzyme breaks down cellulose, or fiber. Unlike others, cellulase comes from the microflora in your gut. It’s not made by your body itself. Without adequate cellulase – due to and imbalanced microbiome - your body isn’t able to make full use of fiber and the phytochemicals found in fruits, vegetables, herbs, grains and other plants, i.e., vitamins A, D, E, and K; omega-e and other fatty acids.)
