How to Clean Up Your Diet

Every journey starts with a single step, whether you are training for your first 5K or changing up your diet. If you’re trying to hit your daily fiber goals, eat more vegetables or shift to a keto diet, it can be a challenge. Cleaning up your diet is a common but somewhat vague goal. How should you get started? A few simple tips can help.

  • Cook at home more often. Start with one day per week. When you cook for yourself, you can control what goes into your meals, making it easier to limit additives, sugar and salt.
  • Choose whole foods when possible. Avoid processed meats, skip prepackaged sauces and opt for homemade when you can.
  • Short on time? Batch cook a meal every couple of nights so you have healthy leftovers on hand when you are busy.
  • Snack on vegetables and fruit instead of chips and candy. Aim to eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
  • When you’re craving a certain food, have a small amount of it (with the right digestive enzymes to help you break it down). Then get back to your usual healthy eating after that! Resisting cravings can sometimes lead to overdoing it later on.
  • Prioritize protein and fiber — two nutrients that will help you stay fuller for longer.
  • When choosing carbs for energy at mealtime, opt for less-processed versions. Think: whole grains, potatoes, sweet potatoes, squash, whole-grain or corn tortillas, etc.
