5 Vegan Diet Tips for Beginners
There are plenty of reasons why someone might want to follow a vegan diet, such as allergies, health benefits or ethical reasons. Whatever your reasoning, a plant-based or vegan diet can feel like a big change if you’ve been following the standard American diet or even a clean omnivorous one.
Here are a few tips to help you get through the early days.
- Go easy on yourself. Read labels and menus, and do your best, but focus on staying nourished without stressing yourself out. It’s OK to transition slowly.
- Focus on whole foods over processed ones. Plan your meals around vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds, etc.
- You can definitely find vegan versions of almost every “junk” food and treat you can think of. Just because something is vegan doesn’t make it nutrient-dense. Save the treats for special occasions, just as you would with the non-vegan ones.
- Slowly increase your fiber intake to avoid occasional digestive distress.
- Don’t force yourself to eat foods you don’t like.
- Don’t forget the vegan foods you already know: Chances are, you may eat some vegan meals like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, oatmeal or pasta with tomato sauce.
