12 Habits That Can Help Occasional Heartburn*
Occasional heartburn is common, impacting one in five US adults at times. In addition to keeping natural solutions on hand for those times you feel the burn, you might consider these simple habits:*
- Avoid trigger foods, including greasy or spicy foods, chocolate, tomatoes and/or citrus.
- Stop smoking and/or vaping (or don’t start).
- Maintain a healthy body weight.
- Remain upright for a few hours after meals, and avoid eating close to bedtime.
- Eat smaller meals more frequently, when possible.
- Chew your food more slowly and thoroughly.
- Reduce or eliminate alcohol.
- Elevate the head of your bed.
- Keep track of the foods that give you occasional heartburn and avoid them.
- Drink plenty of water to help with digestion and hydration.
- Wear loose clothing, as tight waistbands or pants can sometimes cause GI upset.
- Take a gentle walk after eating to help promote digestion.
