Recent breakthroughs in the science of obesity are reshaping the way that people perceive weight, while offering physicians an entirely new toolkit of options with which they can treat overweight and obese patients. Dr. Lamm’s appearance on The View will broadcast on Friday, April 17, 2015 on ABC at 11:00 AM EST/10:00 AM CST/10:00 AM PST.
Currently more than two-thirds of the U.S. adult population is overweight or obese, and 17 percent of U.S. children between the ages of 2 and 19 are obese. As a leading contributor to high-cost conditions such as heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes, America’s weight problem now represents our single greatest health expense, estimated at upward of $190 billion annually.
In his new book, Fighting Fat: Break the Dieting Cycle and Get Healthy for Life!, Dr. Lamm explores the most recent advancements in the treatment of obesity, offering individuals achievable strategies for partnering with their doctors to not only lose weight and keep it off, but more importantly, to reduce their risk of a variety of common health conditions.
“As a doctor, I have a new goal for my overweight patients,” said Lamm. “It’s not to achieve ideal body weight, but instead to reduce medical complications associated with the weight. If I can guide my patients to drop enough weight to reduce the amount of medication they require, and to better manage or even eliminate their medical complications, that’s a success story. The bottom line is that it’s all about health gained, not weight lost.”
